UPSC Syllabus (Prelims + Mains)

The UPSC CSE syllabus is vast but well-defined. It is divided across the Prelims and Mains stages. Understanding it is the first step of any serious preparation strategy.

Prelims – GS Paper I

Current events, History of India and the freedom struggle, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, Environmental Ecology & Biodiversity, and General Science.

Prelims – CSAT Paper II

Comprehension, interpersonal and communication skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision making, basic numeracy and data interpretation. CSAT is qualifying (33%).

Mains – General Studies I–IV

GS-I: Heritage, History, Geography and Society. GS-II: Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations. GS-III: Economy, Environment, Science & Tech, Security and Disaster Management. GS-IV: Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude.

Mains – Essay & Optional

One Essay paper and two papers on an optional subject chosen by the candidate, plus two qualifying language papers.
